Hello Everybody!
Welcome to the newly updated Myia The Bee!
*oooooooh aaaah*
I've recently been in a not so fun place with work and "career" and things of that matter because the company that I work for has recently declared bankruptcy and they've closed 42 of our stores. There's a possibility of the company being bought out and that is good and bad because I'd keep my job (possibly) and most stores would stay open but, it's also bad because we have no idea if we actually would stay open or what we would do under new owners.
Honestly, we kind of all know that retail chains and stores are a bit of a dying breed but there are still tons of people that would rather shop in store than online for a number of reasons.
But, until we know 100% for sure, it's kind of a nerve wracking idea.
So, that being said I have been searching for other jobs and different career possibilities.
I know with having an art degree, jobs, especially in central Wisconsin are difficult to come by unless you're one of the million graphic designers there are (who are very talented).
And I'm not.
I was never into graphic arts because it never drew me in. I figured that I should be the one putting pigment to media and not a computer program.

~However~
now looking back at my schooling, I kind of wish that I would've delved a bit more into getting to know the graphic arts because they're so much higher in demand than a 2D or 3D degree.
*I will say that I am not regretting getting my degree because I love what I've learned*
I've been looking at jobs closer to Madison and Milwaukee and there are a lot more opportunities for me there (obviously), but I'm not ready to move yet because I wouldn't be moving alone and I'm not ready to force Travis into dumping what he has to the unknowing of what a new city would bring.
We also don't know the area too well and would like to do more research before jumping ship.
That being said, I've began looking at other full-time job opportunities here. I've found quite a few that would challenge me in a great way and would work tremendously. Change is good and I think I might be ready for it.

I have an opportunity to teach at a tech school and I’m very excited about it!
I don’t have my teaching license, so I’m not able to teach at public schools in Wisconsin.
I’m still looking into the best way to get that if teaching takes off for me.
I think it would be really fun and it would be in my field of study! BONUS!
So until I find something in a town where Travis is ready to go, I’m staying here.
I know lots of people will say to go for it anyway and do what you can to put yourself out there and to take risks while you can. That’s not where I am right now.
I’ve got a few commissioned pieces I’m working on, and hopefully that’ll bring in more and I’ll get to keep painting on my own time.
Have any of you had trouble finding work in your areas of study? If so, what did you do to get where you are today or what is your plan? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Graduating with a degree in renewable energy and trying to move to the fox valley area was nearly impossible. I sent out probably around 100 resumes to electrical contractors in the area with the whole cover letter/letter of recommendation and everything. Zero replies. Then H&H from Madison called me without me ever reaching out to them. It was a no brainer as we needed to know where we were going to settle down. So we made the move down here and couldn’t be happier with it. Madison is a great community. Big enough but still has that small town feel to it. Good luck in your job searching and all. You’ll know it’s right when it happens. Best of wishes to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the thought of Madison as a place to settle down. I know compared to here it's more expensive to live, but theres lots of opportunities and things to do there. I found a few jobs in Milwaukee at the art museum, but the thought of moving there without knowing much about the actual living areas is a bit daunting. But, you're right, when it happens it happens. I'm glad you guys love Madison and it all worked out for you. Your kids will have a lot of great opportunities growing up there.
